Of Mice and Men Book Review

But George and Lennie escaped from the town by hiding in a ditch until nightfall. After the night of lying in a ditch Lennie and George started to hitchhike. They hitchhiked all the way to Salinas Valley, California.

They got there the next day which was their destination. This is the ranch where they started working. They met an old man of the name Candy. He had been working there for many years. A couple minutes later an anther guy walked in named Curly. George though, manages to arrive a little while before and sits next to him; he comforts him and for the last time the tell each other what is their greatest dream.

The opening of the novel is a detailed description of the surrounding, making it look like a wonderful but mysterious place to be in. It is like a film camera; you get a good view of what nature can give us, but then you see a path which was touched by humans, with two men sitting down close. The climax comes when Lennie accidentally kills the girl in the barn.

Here everything just topples over because Lennie is now in great danger. In fact, the ending is what makes this whole book turn from tragedy, to depression.

You see that a man has just shot in the head his best friend because he had no choice. My eyes back then, while reading the book, had started becoming a fountain of tears.

His ingenuous actions though, bring him to death; all he wanted was to fulfill his dream, nothing else. The theme of this novel is clearly the importance of a close friendship and fraternity between men. Loneliness would only lead to disorientation and craziness in a person. The ranch, as he describes it, is a world without love and in which friendship is viewed as remarkable.

Steinbeck frames the desolation of ranch life by having George and Lennie comment on how different their lives are and having the other ranch hands comment on how unusual it is for two men to travel together. Although they bunk together and play an occasional game of cards or horseshoes, each is wary of his peers. She is a woman who, despite her own dreams of grandeur, finds herself living on a ranch where she is perceived as a threat and an enemy by all the hired hands.

To underscore the situation, Steinbeck adopts restricted third-person narration and employs a tone that can best be described as uninvolved. For this reason, he begins each chapter with a compendium of details that allows readers to envision the scenes much as they might were they watching a staged presentation. Once he has outlined the surroundings, however, he steps away and relies on dialogue to carry the main thread of the story.
